Roller Shutter Questions, Answered

Can’t find your answer? WhatsApp us a photo of your opening and we will advise you.

What is a roller shutter?

A roller shutter is a door or security cover made of horizontal interlocking slats. It rolls up into a coil above the opening. It runs in side guides on both sides and locks into them when closed, so it is secure but takes up almost no space when open.

Which roller shutter is best for a shopfront?

For most shopfronts we recommend the aluminium roller shutter, which has 80 mm interlocking slats and a keyed lock. If you want your display to stay visible after closing, for example in a mall or an F&B outlet, the polycarbonate clear-vision shutter is the better fit.

Can the shutter be made to my exact opening size?

Yes. We fabricate in our own workshop, so every shutter is made to the measured opening. Manual aluminium and polycarbonate shutters go up to about 9 m² in total. Motorised versions go up to 6 m wide and 5 m high.

Can an existing manual shutter be motorised?

In many cases, yes. Motorised operation can be by push button, remote control or key switch. For openings over 4 m high, a chain block or planetary gear can also help with manual lifting. We will confirm what suits your shutter after a site check.

Do you repair shutters installed by another company?

Yes. We service and repair all types of roller shutters and roller doors, including fire-rated, insulated, industrial and commercial units, even if they are third-party products. See Emergency Repair.

How fast can a technician come for a breakdown?

We aim to send a technician within one working day. If you call in the morning, we aim to arrive that afternoon. If you call in the afternoon, we aim to arrive the next day. Breakdowns with a safety or security risk are attended the same day where possible.

Which shutter suits a warehouse or loading bay?

For large, frequently used industrial openings we recommend the heavy-duty colourbond steel roller shutter. It has 100 mm steel slats, an N-series planetary-gear motor and a wireless safety device that stops the door when it meets an obstruction.

What happens during a power failure?

Our roller door drive switches to manual mode and has a hand chain to open the door fully in an emergency. The low-voltage versions of our QUIKO barriers and sliding gates can run on optional batteries, and every sliding gate operator has a manual release.

Can the shutter match my brand colour?

Aluminium and polycarbonate shutters come in natural anodised aluminium as standard. Colour powder coating in the Oxyplus range is available as an option. Roller doors use coloured Zincalume steel.

What maintenance does a roller shutter need?

It depends on how often the door is used and what condition it is in. We start with a site review, then propose a schedule. Each visit includes an all-inclusive safety inspection and minor adjustments. See Regular Maintenance.
